School Resources for NF Children

Meredith Chambers, M. Ed., Education Specialist on the Multidisciplinary Neurofibromatosis Team at Boston Children’s Hospital has worked with NF Northeast to present webinars and Zoom recordings to help families have the most successful school experience possible.

Meredith Chambers, M. Ed.

Back to School 2020-21
School looks very different this year across the districts with many variations on the three models offered. It is a challenging time for families and children alike. Learning will be in a new format.  It will be important to be patient while everyone transitions back after being away. And it will be equally important to be kind to yourselves especially when working out the kinks of a new school year combined with the many unknowns. It will take time to acclimate to the new rules, expectations and learning formats. Share any information that you are comfortable sharing with school that may be helpful in understanding your child. Communicate with your child’s teacher/team often and reach out early with questions or concerns. While this is an unusual school year, let’s look forward to a positive and healthy experience for everyone!

Below are three Zoom recordings. The first and most recent recording describes your rights as parents (Massachusetts law). The next is on understanding the IEP document. This will be helpful for anyone who may have questions about the meaning of different sections of the IEP. With most IEP meetings being held remotely, this will be a helpful guide. The other recording offers a quick description of the components involved in the reading process. It also has a useful comprehension checklist and how to use it to help extract meaning from reading. It will be helpful for a fluent reader of any age. Please note the passwords have to be entered separately, they won’t work as a cut and paste.

Best of luck in the new school year!
Meredith
