The NF Community Spotlight is on Lori Ryan, RN, MS, the founder of the Annual Steps2Cure NF 5k walk/run at Lake Quannapowitt in Wakefield that celebrated its 10th Anniversary on Sunday, October 23rd.
What started as a small event with 75 attendees has grown to as many as 400 attendees in some years, and thanks to Lori’s unwavering efforts to constantly improve the event, Steps2Cure NF has raised $400,000 to support the mission of NF Northeast. Three years ago, Lori established the NF Scholarship Program to provide scholarships to students who have NF and wish to further their education after high school. Since the program began twenty-one students from the Northeast have received scholarships of $1,000 each. Funds for the scholarship program are also raised at Steps2Cure NF.
Steps2Cure NF brings families and patients together from near and far, and there is something for everyone: a timed 5K run, a walk around the Lake, face painting, games and everyone’s favorite – the Kids Dash with many of the children wearing their Halloween costumes!
Whether they walk or run along the shores of Lake Quannapowitt, where the scenery is brilliant with fall colors, all participants enjoy donuts, hot chocolate, hot dogs, fruit, ice cream and plenty of snacks. Returning as this year’s Master of Ceremonies is Emily Riemer of WCVB-TV.
Lori and her extended family have been involved with Neurofibromatosis Northeast for over 14 years, and they all rally to volunteer at Steps2Cure NF.
In addition to her commitment to Steps2Cure NF, Lori Ryan currently serves as Chair of the Board of Directors for Neurofibromatosis Northeast. She also chairs the Medical and Scientific Committee, made up of prominent scientists, doctors and business leaders. Lori represents Neurofibromatosis Northeast at external scientific meetings and serves as a volunteer to the Mass Biotech Council.
She has travelled to Capitol Hill with the NF Advocacy Network to lobby for Federal NF research funding through the Department of Defense and National Institutes of Health. She has also participated as a consumer reviewer of research proposals for the DOD NF research program.
Lori Ryan’s dedication to promoting research, creating awareness and providing hope and support to everyone who is affected by NF knows no bounds. As we celebrate the 10th Anniversary of Steps2Cure NF the Community Spotlight shines bright on Lori Ryan!
