This week’s Community Spotlight is on Melissa and Mike Malerba in recognition of their unwavering commitment to cure NF.
When Melissa and Mike learned that their son Jonathan has neurofibromatosis type 1, they didn’t waste a minute, and contacted the NF Northeast office to volunteer their help. From that very first day they made a promise to create a better future for their son and for everyone who lives with NF.
The 7th Annual Committed to Curing NF Event took place on Saturday, November 5th at Anthony’s of Malden in Massachusetts. As in the past, over 400 people attended this popular fundraiser that was started by the Malerba’s. Committed to Curing NF is an event where NF families and friends have a chance to socialize, enjoy great food and fun, and win prizes in the raffles and auctions. Plus, to add to the fun this year there were Casino Tables and mobile bidding on the many fabulous silent auction items!
The event has raised well over $440,000 for NF research since it began 7 years ago and is only one of the many ways that Melissa and Mike have demonstrated their commitment to cure NF.
Along with their son, Mike and Melissa also have a daughter named Emma, and they are all familiar faces at any event that benefits NF. Their home is always open to host gatherings of NF patients and families, even those who travel for many miles to come to one of the Boston hospitals for treatment. There is no bounds to their generous spirits.
Along with running numerous marathons and riding her bike 100 miles for NF, Melissa is also an active member of the NF Northeast Advocacy Team that successfully lobbies Congress for federal funding of NF research. As a member of the NF Northeast Board of Directors she sits on the Strategic Planning Committee.
Melissa and Mike are an inspiration to all parents who hear those terrifying words “your child has NF”. They faced the diagnosis head-on and won’t give up the fight until they defeat NF!
